Review of the recall:
Certain models of Kidde fire extinguishers with plastic handles reportedly fail to discharge properly in a fire emergency because the nozzle becomes clogged. Some reports also indicate that the nozzle may detach with enough force to cause injury on impact.
A total of 391 reports have been filed with complaints of failed or limited discharge or nozzle detachment. One incident in 2014 resulted in the death of a civilian when emergency responders couldn’t douse a car fire because the recalled Kidde extinguisher they attempted to use became clogged. In total, 16 injuries, 91 incidents of property damage, and the fatality described here spurred the Kidde recall, which was announced on November 2, 2017.
